Urban redevelopment in the inner-city

The massive loss of jobs in the steel industry has led to a structural crisis in the city of Völklingen and to the collapse of the inner-city. In early 2000, the inner-city was characterised by a high level of vacant commercial and residential properties which caused the city to devise a design-based urban redevelopment process. The upgrading of public spaces, the demolition of individual properties and the modernisation of culturally important buildings have given the inner-city a new attractiveness.
